Back in 2018, I had the opportunity to visit King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) for work—and it left a lasting impression. Nestled on the Red Sea coast just an hour north of Jeddah, KAUST feels like another world: quiet, cutting-edge, and beautifully designed.
One of the highlights of my visit was the Museum of Science & Technology in Islam, an inspiring space that showcases the deep-rooted history of innovation in the Islamic world. From ancient navigation tools to early surgical instruments, the museum tells a powerful story of curiosity and invention.
I also had a chance to stroll through KAUST’s impressive library, where I picked up a signed copy of Ali Al-Naimi’s Out of the Desert from their bookstore—a treasure for any energy enthusiast. The views of the Red Sea from the reading areas? Absolutely breathtaking.
If you’re interested in visiting KAUST, there is a way—though it requires a bit of planning. The Museum of Science & Technology in Islam is primarily open to the KAUST community and invited guests, but visitors can explore the museum through KAUST’s General Visit Program. The tour includes:
- A presentation about the university,
- A visit to the Museum of Science in Islam,
- And a walk through the KAUST Library.
Tours run Sunday to Thursday, starting at 3:00 p.m. and ending by 5:00 p.m., and must be booked at least 48 hours in advance. More details here.
For those wanting to explore beyond the typical Jeddah itinerary, a visit to KAUST is well worth the drive. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation of science, history, and the world-class education and innovation happening right here on the Red Sea. Don’t forget to stop for dinner at one of the nearby fresh fish restaurants on your way back—it’s the perfect ending to a thoughtful, scenic outing.
